The Sales Operations Optimization Study that CSO recently released examined many different companies to determine the effectiveness of their sales operations. The following was our takeaway:

You need a sales operation, not just a sales force

These days, your team needs to include administrative support and management. Your sales force can’t do it all alone. The best way to support your team is also to have an effective CRM system in place, such as Zoho. It also helps to work with a Zoho consultant to ensure everyone on your team has a thorough understanding of everything Zoho has to offer.

Many small businesses don’t have a sales operation

According to the study, more than half of businesses have a sales operation. But when it comes to small businesses, or those with less than $10 million in revenues, only 37.3 percent had a sales operation. As a small business, it can sometimes be difficult to recognize the advantages of certain things. This not only includes having the right sales team, but also the right CRM system.

Forecasting needs improvement

Many businesses surveyed in the study agreed that they needed to improve on their sales forecasting in the next two years. This can also tie into other bad business habits, such as lack of good data tracking. The good news is that when businesses take the steps necessary to improve these things, such as investing in a CRM system to keep better track of important data, their results improve.

Many people aren’t getting the most from their CRM systems

Even though the majority of the study’s participants said that they have implemented CRM systems in their businesses, only 24.9 percent of them said they were fully confident in their CRM system’s data. Another 32 percent said that their systems are less than three-quarters adopted, and only 25.2 percent said that business productivity increased after implementing their CRM systems.

Does this mean it’s not worth investing in a CRM system? Not necessarily. It is certainly worth it if you are getting the most from your CRM system. The study also revealed that when businesses adopted at least 75 percent of what their CRM systems are capable of and combined it with a a formal sales process, they saw significant improvements.
