Tips for Zoho Custom Modules

By June 6, 2019May 6th, 2020No Comments

Zoho Creator HelpZoho has many great out of the box modules. But sometimes businesses may find that they want to customize the content of those modules, or even create new modules all together. One of the things that make this program so create is that Zoho allows you to customize modules to meet you needs. This process can be a little tricky, so here are some tips to navigate through Zoho Custom Modules.

Creating A New Custom Module

To access the part of Zoho where you can customize Modules and Fields, go to the set up page. From there you can select “Modules and Fields” under the “Customization” list. Once you have selected “Modules and Fields” you can click the blue button that says, “create new module”.  You can give it a title, then save and continue your customizations. To set the Module Permissions, select the Gear at the top of the window, then Module Permission. From here you can specify which of your users has access to the specific module.  We recommend keeping your Zoho custom modules set to administrator only, until you are ready to fully go live with your new custom module.

Adding Customized Fields in your Module

There are 21 field types available for customization in Zoho. The Zoho subscription that you have will dictate how many of each custom fields are available to you when you create you Zoho custom module. You can select the “Custom Fields Left” link to view the remaining number of fields available for each type. When you click on the link, on the left, you will see the maximum fields available for each field type. On the right, you will see the specific number of available fields left for each type. This updates as you add or remove fields from layouts. These limits apply to every module—not the entire system or the specific layout.

To add custom or out-of-the-box fields to a layout, simply select and drag one of the field types on the left onto the layout, in the section required. You can identify out-of-the-box fields vs. custom fields by looking at the field label color. If the text is black, the field is out-of-the-box. If the text is brown or sepia-colored, it is a custom field. To remove a field from a Zoho custom module layout, just click the “…” button, then “remove field”. If you do not remove the field permanently, the field will move to the “Unused Items” section. You can click and drag these fields to add them back to the layout.
