Migrating Notes & Attachments to Lightning

By April 24, 2020No Comments

To help organization’s transition to Lightning Experience, Salesforce Labs introduced the Magic Mover for Notes and Attachments to Lightning Experience app that allows admins to Convert Attachments to Files and configure Notes.

This tool allows you to identify notes and attachments in total or in groups and migrate them so they can be used in the new Notes and Files related lists.  After migrating, you can remove the classic Notes & Attachments related list from your page layouts.

The tool includes a way to:

  • Admins use the ‘Attachments to Files’ tool to do bulk conversion of all the non-private attachments in an organization.
  • Users who have private attachments use the ‘My Private Attachments’ tool to convert their private attachments to files.
  • Admins use the ‘Notes Conversion’ tool to do bulk conversion of all the public notes in an organization.
  • Admins use the ‘Update Page Layouts’ tools to update layouts for use with the new related lists exclusively.

Conversion of attachments and notes is supported for custom objects and the following standard objects: Account, Asset, Campaign, Case, Contact, Contract, Lead, Opportunity, Product, Quote, and Solution.

The app does not convert Email Attachments from attachments to files. In fact, it’s fine to leave your email attachments as attachments. Email attachments modeled as attachments can be viewed within Lightning.

If you have a full Sandbox Organization, you can do a trial installation and conversion there.  If not, you can do a small group of Notes and/or Attachments to verify all is working.

I have used this tool to migrate classic Notes & Attachments successfully.
